Statement about painting

Over the last few years my paintings have shifted their emphasis from a concern with the interaction of vibrant colour to a slightly bleaker range of imagery that focuses on mood, atmosphere and space. I’ve often been drawn to imagery relating to sea and foreshore, coastlines and estuaries. For me these places, their space and light, the objects present there, often evoke feelings of nostalgia and melancholy which I like to explore. In addition I like to work in a place that is somewhere between abstraction and figuration. An artistic attempt to have my cake and eat it I suppose.
